I wanted to take a moment of your time and share what I’ve learned about convening activities with Newcomers, and why I’d love to encourage women to volunteer.

Everything that Newcomers has to offer is based on volunteering. Voluntary work behind the scenes, voluntary attendance on scene. I wholeheartedly encourage you to sign up and participate in as much as possible – it all offers the opportunity to meet others, to learn, and to have fun. And if you’re keen to take it a step further, volunteer to convene an existing activity or even come up with a new one!

The work is minimal – some emailing, list-making, maybe some phone calls, perhaps some meetings with co-conveners (depending on the activity,) participation on the day and BAM! Then comes the reward: you’re getting out, meeting new people, checking out your new hometown, and helping others do the same. Win, win!

For example, I loved the Heritage Tours, but they were always full. So, I decided to help convene; now I have guaranteed participation and I get a say in where and when we go. I also recently convened a One-of-a-Kind tour. (One-of-a-Kind tours are perfect if you have a one off idea that would benefit from group vs solo attendees.) Fourteen of us went wine-tasting in the Cowichan Valley – see the photos below!

Any questions about VWNC activities, or if you’re keen on volunteering to convene, reach out to Diana, our activities coordinator extraordinaire: vwncactivity@gmail.com . You won’t regret it!

Cheers, Karina aka the Webmaster
