While Victoria is an amazing place to live, with temperate weather and amazing geography, it is also susceptible to a range of natural and human-induced emergencies. Would you know what to do if the city experienced an earthquake? Is your home located in a tsunami hazard zone?

The City of Victoria has a small Emergency Management team that is responsible for preparedness, planning, mitigation, response and recovery for major emergencies including fire, floods, earthquake, tsunami, extreme weather, etc. Their goal is to build disaster-resilient communities with people who practice ‘everyday readiness’ such as knowing their neighbours, ensuring that your phone is always charged and buying extra non-perishable food each time you get groceries.

This team offers emergency preparedness sessions on a regular basis however, community liaison officers will also work with community groups or stratas to assist them in developing emergency plans.

There are many resources available to residents to help them understand the risks and develop an action plan in the case of a disaster. The City wants you and your family to be self-sufficient for at least seven (7) days after an emergency as they forecast that emergency service personnel are likely to be overwhelmed with demand.
